Created entirely from images and videos in midjourney, this video takes its cue from the song’s title and points to the fact that we are constantly being told what to do, by the multitude of signs and buttons we are confronted with. The video ends with where this is all leading us, and ultimately with our inherent choice and responsibility of what to do about it. Just like the subjects of Milgram’s famous experiment, we need to decide.

‘In a way, with this track, I was trying to understand how we as a species do truly horrible and barbaric things to each other during situations like wartime. Originally I called it Milgram’s 37 and then it became We Do What We’re Told which was just the chorus repeated again and again. When we played it live, I used to ask people to sing along with the chorus. I think some people got the irony but not everyone.’

Inspired by the music and lyrics of the song, this work explores the theme of departed loved ones and those they leave behind. The creative process included reading Peter's interviews about the song's genesis, researching expressions of remembrance in art and culture, and noting personal associations evoked by the lyrics and reflections on loss. The central theme that emerged is that of empty homes symbolizing the absence of their former inhabitants. Starlings are used to represent the pervasive wonder and mystery that exists all around us, before and after we are here.

“I wrote a song for my dad a number of years back, which I was actually able to play him, which was ‘Father, Son’. When my mum died, I wanted to do something for her, but it's taken a while before I felt comfortable and distant enough to be able to write something.

I was trying also to write a little bit in the style of the music that my parents responded to, so I think there is some music from the 40s probably that had an influence on the song. In the middle I wanted to write my mum a beautiful melody. She loved classical music, so we have a beautiful cello playing there. It took a while to get that right, it can't be too emotional or too underplayed, but I think we got there in the end.”
